8-Day Morocco Tour Itinerary from Marrakech

DAY 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Kasbah of Telouet – Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate

The 8-day tour of the Moroccan desert begins with an early transfer from the airport or your accommodation in Marrakech. Then, you drive through the fascinating High Atlas Mountains and the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass, with stops to enjoy panoramic views of the stunning landscapes. Next, we visit the Kasbah of Telouet.

Afterwards, we continue to visit the famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified village recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This kasbah has appeared in many movies such as Gladiator, Alexander, The Mummy, and in TV series like Game of Thrones. Then we head to the “Gateway to the Desert,” Ouarzazate. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 2: Ouarzazate – Skoura Palm Groves – Kasbah Amridil – Valley of the Roses – Dades Valley

After breakfast, we explore the city of Ouarzazate. First, we visit the Atlas Studios, where several famous movies were filmed, and also the Kasbah Taourirt, a fortified clay castle and one of the oldest and most spectacular ksars in Morocco. Then we drive east to visit Kasbah Amridil, surrounded by palm groves in Skoura. We continue to Kalaa Magouna, famous for the Valley of the Roses, where an annual festival is held in May featuring local products such as perfumes, rose water, oils, and cosmetics. Afterwards, we drive to the Dades Valley via Boumalne Dades, making stops at the “Monkey Fingers” rock formation and at a viewpoint overlooking the Dades Valley. Dinner and overnight at a riad in Boumalne Dades.

DAY 4: Explore the Merzouga region – Nomads – Khamlia – Merzouga Lake – Erg Chebbi – Palm Grove

First, we visit an old kohl (eyeliner) mine. Then, we visit the nomads in their handwoven tents and enjoy a Berber tea. We continue to the village of Khamlia to enjoy Gnawa music and dances, performed by inhabitants originally from sub-Saharan countries such as Mali, Sudan, and Niger. Free time for lunch at a restaurant. Afterwards, we take a walk through a palm grove and drive a few kilometers to the wild Merzouga Lake, also known as the Flamingo Lake. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.

DAY 5: Merzouga Dunes – Erfoud – Midelt – Cedar Forest – Ifrane – Fes

After breakfast, we leave the desert to visit the city of Rissani, the former capital of Tafilalet and still an active commercial center with a large souk on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. After a walk through the Rissani souk, we continue to Erfoud to visit a fossilized marble workshop.

Then we drive through the Ziz River Valley, stopping for a panoramic view. Free time for lunch in Midelt. We continue to the cedar forest, home to the Barbary macaques, which can be fed while walking. Afterwards, we visit Ifrane, known for its low temperatures, snow, and Alpine-style houses, often called the “Switzerland of Morocco.” Finally, we arrive at our accommodation in Fes.

DAY 6: Guided Tour of Fes

After breakfast, we begin exploring Fes, Morocco’s most iconic imperial city and the cultural and spiritual heart of the country. The tour starts by car, first at the Royal Palace Gate, then the Jewish quarter, “Mellah.” Next, we enjoy panoramic views from Borj Sud fortress and visit the pottery village and school to observe traditional craftsmanship.

Then, a walking tour through the medieval Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, accompanied by a local guide. Visits include the Al-Attarine Madrasa, the University and Mosque of Al Quaraouiyine, the oldest university in the world, and the Chouara Tanneries to see traditional leather dyeing. Return to the riad to rest.

DAY 7: Fes – Meknes – Ruins of Volubilis – Chefchaouen

After breakfast, we depart for Meknes, the Ismaili and imperial capital. We visit Bab Al-Mansour, Sahrij Souani, the royal stables, granary, and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail. Free time for lunch. Then, 30 km from Meknes, we visit the Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, featuring beautiful mosaics, pillars, and ancient arches.

After exploring the ruins, we continue north through Ouazzane to reach Chefchaouen, the “Blue City” in the Rif Mountains, famous for its streets and buildings painted in shades of blue. Overnight at the hotel.

DAY 8: Transfer to Tangier Airport

After breakfast, depending on your flight schedule, free time to stroll through the alleys of the Blue City. Then, transfer through the Rif Mountains to Tangier and onward to the airport. End of the 8-day tour.
